So, now that I have figured out how to upload photos to the blog, I’ll have to break up all the long-winded writing I have been doing with some pictures. I love making earrings more than anything else. That’s probably because I have short hair and I really like wearing funky earrings. Photographing earrings is a real challenge. I am still searching for the right support piece and technique. Here are some earrings I wear alot, all made in mid-2006 or 2007:
Glazed Ultralight earrings. I love wearing these, they’re so light I don’t feel them. Sculpey Ultralight glazed with tinted Liquid Sculpey
Watercolor Patchwork squares. These have a lot of movement. Painted polymer clay veneers assembled like a patchwork quilt.
Bright Sticks Earrings. Painted polymer veneers rolled into tiny “sticks”. Lots of movement.
Turquoise Beaded Earrings. The tiny cones are painted polymer clay veneers. I made a fun multi-strand beaded necklace with a dangle using a triple stack of larger polymer cones. I lost the original photo in a hard drive crash. I’ll have to re-shot a picture soon.

My favorite way to photo earrings is using a piece of plexiglas (ok, the box part of a cheapy box frame from Michaels/AC Moore) with two holes drilled in it, and backed with a gradient sheet of paper.
Actually, I need to remake the one I’m using now – the dremel I used to make the holes in the frame was a bit low on charge (and the bit could have been dull, too), which means that the holes aren’t as neat as I’d like.
That sounds like it has real possibilities. I am sure that Photoshop has some way to edit out the supports, but I am not familiar enough with the program beyond the basics.
I just looked at the new Lark book 500 Earrings and the majority of the earrings are photographed on an ear or just laying on a gradient background.
Libby, I love the patchwork ones! The shape really speaks to me, I like the subtle colors, and I love how you’ve used non-traditional ear wires. Anyone can do a fish-hook – they look very artsy on those wires.

Thanks Lisa. That’s a favorite shape of mine lately. The movement is really fun. I’m also experimenting with other new shapes of ear wires. I made those ear wires with Argentium silver which balls up like Fine Silver when heated with a torch and can also be work hardened by baking in an oven. Cool stuff!
