The Buzz on Bead & Button & The Move Begins

by Libby on June 17, 2006

I am back from the Bead & Button Show. It was a really fun week. I started with Arline Fisch’s amazing Master Class on Textile Techniques in Metal. We wove, braided, plaited, twisted, folded, crocheted and knit with wire and also with thin sheets of metal. It was so much fun. She showed many fantastic slides of her work and of work by students and colleagues. Incredibly inspring! My fellow students were wonderful and so interesting. It was also fun to run across some of them in the last few days as we experienced other classes.

The Bead Show itself was fantastic as usual. It’s bead shopping nirvana. I was much more restrained than usual with the move coming up next week.

Having friends there really made the whole thing special. I always have a blast sharing a room with Diane Villano. She’s was teaching as usual and this year she managed to squeeze in time to take a couple of classes. I also got to catch up with my friend Evalie who lives in Saudi Arabia.

Right now I am sitting in a sea of moving boxes. It feels really decadent to have someone pack for you, but it’s worth it. It allowed me to go to Bead & Button and it made it possible for the whole family to live a more normal life during the last few weeks when I would have had to pack pack pack. Frankly, considering how incredibly hard it was just to get the kids to pack a week’s worth of clothes and their few special we-need-to-move-it-ourselves items, we’d never have gotten the packing done on time.

It’s really sad how quickly a home can morph into just a house when everything gets put in boxes. It looks so empty and lonely. This move isn’t wrenching like the last one, but it feels sad sitting here nonetheless. Of course it’s much better than last time when I just sat on the front steps and wept at one point. I hated leaving our old house. We built it. I remember going over the plans and watching it take shape as it was built. And it was a happy house filled with happy memories of our family. I hope we can fill our new home with loads of wonderful new memories.

Internet access will be spotty for the rest of the week. So next time I officially check in we’ll be living in Connecticut.

Libby, I am sorry I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye before I left. It was great to see you again! I hope things are getting all squared away for you and your family. I know this is a hectic time for all of you! Things are finally calming down here. Today was the last day of school. Graduation, and prom are over, now I just have to finish a quilt before I leave for repat in a couple of weeks.
