Guild meetings

by Libby on April 24, 2007

We had a meeting of the Southern Connecticut Polymer Clay Guild this weekend. It had been a couple of months since I had last been to a meeting, due to family obligations and that freak St Patrick’s weekend snowstorm. Last year, while we were living in New Jersey, I couldn’t make meetings in Connecticut, and the Northern NJ Guild was having trouble getting meetings organized. So, while guild meetings used to be a regular and expected monthly event, I still haven’t fallen smoothly back into the routine. Going to the meeting this month was so energizing! I’ve been away just enough that I wasn’t expecting that zing or spark of shared creative energy.

If you’ve ever thought about attending a guild meeting (especially in CT), but were afraid of how you might “fit in”, please go to one. Our guild is a very generous and welcoming group. It’s just so wonderful to be in the company of other people who share your passion. We’ve been having creative challenges every couple of months. The last one, Debbie hannded out hanks of telephone wire. The challenges are optional so only a few people brought in pieces using the wire, but what variety in what they did with the wire!

I am headed north for another college visit with my daughter. Real life has a way of creeping in. LOL I joke about it, but it’s hard to maintain a high state of creativity when there are loads of interruptions. I’ll leave you with a couple of photos. First my abandoned worktable.

And a pile of squares. I’ve been baking squares of the different veneers I have made lately. I’m not sure what I am going to do with them, but I’ll think of something.

Hi Libby,

I like those squares. They remind me of fabric that has been dyed and overprinted. Perhaps your quilting background creeping into your work?? I can’t wait to see what happens with them.

Ha! No quilting background here, other than I am an avid admirer of art quilts. My daughter and I were just talking about how completely we’d lack the patience to finish a quilt. They do remind me of fabrics though. The look I shoot for in my veneers these days is something between fabric and collage.

Hi Libby, I found your blog today and really like your squares. It looks like you’ve had fun playing and experimenting! I wholeheartedly agree with you about guilds. I’m a member of the Rhode Island polymer clay guild and I consider my guildmates my tribe. It is a great experience to get together every month with such talented, creative ladies. I so look forward to the day of our meeting and, yes, the energy is so inspiring!
