Sorry, I just couldn’t resist the title. I have a love/hate relationship with rivets. I love how they function and I love the look, but I struggle with getting them so they look right. I suspect some of the challenge I am experiencing comes from the fact that I am often riveting directly into polymer clay, and polymer has some “give” to it. I do find it easier to place rivets when I am riveting with a decorative metal piece. It’s getting a bit easier though. Well, most of the time. (insert wry grin here)
Karen brought up an interesting comment about simple versus complex and why do we keep pushing to make pieces more complex. I don’t really know the answer to that question, but it’s certainly an issue for me. Here’s a pendant that is a pretty good example of too much complexity for me:
This particular pendant has me a bit befuddled. There are parts of the design I like, but the overall effect is a miss for me. It’s ok, but it doesn’t sing.
The next two pendants are pretty simple. Unfortunately, the photos don’t really show the subtle shimmer of the glazes or the feel of the texture. They are both based on a texture sheet I made while at the Klay Karma retreat.
I love the texture. It makes me think of rivers and marsh grasses. I am definitely going to do some more with it. It’s just too fun. Of the two, I prefer the blue pendant. I think I went a bit overboard with the rivets on the purple one. It’s just really hard to stop sometimes. Simpler is better. I should print that out and tape it to my bench!

I really like these pendants. I like the green one, too. I tried to visualize how it would look if the middle oval was centered over the bottom oval and then have the last oval offset. I think I still like the way you did it best, but it is hard to know. I bet if these were displayed together in a show, people would have a hard time determining the one they liked the best!

I really like the texture on the purple and blue. You did have a productive time at KK.
What if you replaced the small center oval on the green with a different shape? Maybe a square?

I like the green pendant, but agree that it just doesn’t sing. For me, there doesn’t seem to be enough contrast between the elements. They just kind of appear all munged up together.
