Silent Studio

by Libby on September 27, 2007

I haven’t done any work in the studio for quite awhile. Essentially I stopped just before my surgery and I haven’t gotten back into the creative flow again. Writing about my creativity has forced me to look at my studio habits and realize that creativity is just that: a habit. If you don’t keep it up, it can become rusty from lack of use.

Oddly that observation surprised me. I think I have always viewed my creative impulse as being something between a divine gift and an appendage. (that is something that is such an integral part of what makes me “me”, it’s like an arm or a leg) I’m not sure how or when I am going to manage it as the days ahead look full, but I am going to flex my creative muscle and fill my studio with the sound of activity.

And on another note:  today is E’s 17th birthday.  How could she have gotten so old and grown up so fast?  I feel like I can count the days until she’s off to college and away from us.  It’s a poignant age for parents and an exciting one for the kid.  So Happy Birthday E!

Bringing things back to a jewelry note, she flattered me enormously this morning by rummaging through the box of pendants which hadn’t sold at the Bead Bazaar to wear one to school.  This is the child who doesn’t wear jewelry.  It’s a huge compliment that she wanted to wear something I’d made. Huge I tell you.  I’m still smiling.

First off, Happy Birthday to Ms. E. Hope she has a day that’s full of friends, music, books, love & laughter. I can’t believe she’s 17, either!! Seems like it was only yesterday I was having supper with you to celebrate her 15th. And yes, blow me down that she wanted to wear a pendant of yours. Guess it’s proof that they’re something special, as is their creator. =)

You may be right that being creative is a habit… but for me, well, Grant said it best in his post, particularly the line “In other words, I don’t have to know where I’m going to get there. I just start.”.
